Although Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck was the Heisman Trophy favorite in both the preseason and throughout much of the 2011 regular season, the Heisman race hadn’t been this wide open in years.

I fear this hire.

Coach Kevin Sumlin and his prolific offense made Houstona power in Conference USA.

His next challenge will be trying to replicate that success in the Southeastern Conference, the country’s toughest football league, as Texas A&M‘s new coach.

Sumlin was hired as the Aggies’ new coach on Saturday, less than two weeks after Mike Sherman was fired following a disappointing 6-6 finish.

The Aggies (6-6) are scheduled to play Northwestern (6-6) in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Houston on Dec. 31, with A&M defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter serving as interim coach.

From Hardball Talk

We heard earlier this week that Darren Oliver was on the verge of re-signing with the Rangers, but things have evidently changed over the past few days.

ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick reports that the veteran left-hander is drawing interest from multiple teams, including the Red Sox, and is “keeping an open mind” on his destination for next season.

Oliver earned $3.25 million this season while posting a 2.29 ERA and 44/11 K/BB ratio over 51 innings. One of the more unsung middle relievers in the game, he has an outstanding 2.97 ERA since moving to the bullpen full-time in 2006. The 41-year-old was mulling retirement following the World Series, but recently decided to return for his 19th season in the big leagues.

I guess Shawn Marion is feeling emboldened now that he’s an NBA champion. The Mavericks forward showed up to camp Friday rocking the Sisqo. I know brazen fashion statements paid off for Dallas last year, but I can’t imagine this is a good sign for the upcoming season.

It’s the best day in rivalries for sports. It’s Army/Navy day!

I realize Navy has won the last 9 years, but I believe the times are finally changing for the Black Knights of Army.

Great story here.

The Heisman Trophy will be awarded tonight. I read an excellent story on Baylor’s Robert Griffin and I hope the guy wins it.
