Rangers release catcher Yorvit Torrealba

Yorvit Torrealba wasn’t long for Texas as soon as the Rangers traded for Geovany Soto and today the veteran catcher was placed on release waivers.

T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports that the Rangers tried to trade Torrealba and his $3.25 million contract, but couldn’t find any takers.

He’ll be outright released as soon as he clears waivers without being claimed, at which point it wouldn’t be surprising to see a contender snatch him up for the minimum salary as a backup.

Signed to a two-year, $6.25 million contract as a free agent in November of 2010, he hit .262 with a .305 on-base percentage and .382 slugging percentage in 162 games while throwing out 30 percent of steal attempts.

I understand what the Rangers were doing, but has anyone noticed since Torrealba stopped catching Yu Darvish that Darvish’s numbers have exploded? And not in a good way.
