Kerri Walsh reveals she was five weeks pregnant when she won Olympic gold medal

Fom Off the Bench:

It should have been no surprise, really: Kerri Walsh Jennings (left) had one child for each of her first two Olympic gold medals. So, when she won a third gold at the London Games … Yep. Walsh Jennings revealed on the Today Show on Monday that she’s 11 weeks pregnant.

That means that when she won beach volleyball gold at the London Games she was five weeks with child. She said she suspected something was up when she began getting really “moody and touchy” during the games, and couldn’t explain it as being part of the stress of competition.

“When I was throwing my body around fearlessly, and going for gold for our country, I was pregnant, and today I’m 11 weeks pregnant,” Walsh Jennings told Matt Lauer.

Their baby, due April 9, will join the couple’s sons, Joey, 3, and Sundance, 2.

First diagnosis was from her playing partner, Misty May Treanor. Because who knows you better than your beach volleyball partner?

“You’re probably pregnant,” her beach volleyball partner, Misty May-Treanor, said. And sure enough, her teammate was right.

Dr. Nancy Snyderman, NBC’s chief medical editor, says competing at the games did not increase Walsh Jennings’ risk of pregnancy complications.

“The risk that she put to herself and fetus was zero to none,” she said.

Her husband is pro beach volleyball player Casey Jennings.

What are the chances of a fourth child for the couple? Kerri Walsh Jennings has already said that she’s going to try for more gold at the Rio de Janiero Games in 2016, so it’s possible. (May Treanor has announced her retirement).

“I want it,” she said of a fourth gold. “I feel like I have so much more to learn, so much more to accomplish. I’m planning on coming back stronger and smarter.”
