Good Saturday to you, and Texas continues to make news

It’s no secret I have good friends at NBC’s Off the Bench. I’ve known Rick Chandler for a few years now, and he used to work at Deadspin before getting his own gig at NBC.

Well apparently he and his co-writer on the weekends, Ben Chew, (Gesundheit!),  seem to locate stories from Texas even more so than me, and I live here, while Rick lives in California. It just proves how big the internet is. Take a look at some of the Texas stories Off the Bench has posted:

Texas 8th grader kicks 63-yard field goal in practice

Yesterday, Off the Bench covered a video of a high school kicker in Washington draining a 67-yard field goal to tie a game but he wasn’t the only young kicker draining it from distance.

In this clip from Texas, one fourteen-year old from Midland by the name of Blake Carter decided to show off his leg in a recent junior high school practice. With help from his coach as the holder, Blake lines up a 63-yard field goal attempt.

Watch as his kick gets plenty of leg and goes toward a set of uprights on the other side of the field:

Although it’s tough to tell if it actually goes in, I’m going to believe that the celebration was justified.

Wind blows punt at Texas high school football game backwards for safety (video)

One thing that I have learned is that you don’t mess with Mother Nature and the sheer power that she creates can cause some crazy weather-related sports moments like the one seen below.

In the third quarter of a recent football game between Byron Nelson High School and Denton Guyer High School in Texas, Byron Nelson was setting up to punt from their own 27-yard line.

As the punter for Byron Nelson got it up into the air, the camera guy filming the play for a local broadcaster does his best to track the ball but loses sight of it. Only a few seconds later, he relocates the ball as it bounces into the end zone.

During the punt, a heavy gust of wind blew the ball backwards and sent the ball rolling into the end zone where the Byron Nelson punter recovered it for a safety:

Dallas Stars ice girls spend a day at a lake, lip-sync Little Big Town song (video)

Since the National Hockey League is still under a lockout, the Dallas Stars Ice Girls don’t exactly have a lot to do. So, it appears they decided to get away from the sadness of the NHL lockout and go spend day at a lake.

The highlights of that special lake day were compiled and mixed together by the Stars production team who made a day boating at a lake into watchable gold.

The song that they are lip-synching is Little Big Town’s “Pontoon” and if you’re ready to see some bikini-clad Ice Girls take a dip in the water, this might be the video you need to view as soon as possible:
